Dr Price’s Total Health Tips
Tip #14: Pediatric Chiropractic

PEDIATRIC CHIROPRACTIC

Pediatric chiropractic is basically chiropractic applied to children. There are key times when chiropractic is important in a child's development.

Newborn: During birth the skull is compressed. I have a specialized Chiropractic technique that aids the skull in returning to normal. It is a gentle procedure that can be taught to the parent and can prevent spinal problems in the future. When you come in for the new mother and baby adjustment, you will be taught this simple yet effective procedure.

From birth of your baby through 1½ year the bones in the lower back of the young child are still cartilage, not developed bone. Before children can sit by themselves they should not be put in a position of sitting or standing for any great length of time.

Examples of this are walkers, bouncers, jolly-jumpers, etc. A baby who learns to jump before they can stand puts more than their body weight on the vertebrae and can lead to a separation of the vertebrae leading to a lifetime of pain and discomfort.

Some babies under six-months of age may have rudimentary reflexes for standing. When you play with them they will want to stand. This is good for development as long as it’s not overdone.

1 years old: It is best to have a complete chiropractic exam and adjustment for a child once a year to maintain proper physical structure. This exam detects any problems of growth and development such as posture or muscular imbalances leading to walking problems.

Once the baby can sit or stand by himself he has developed the stamina and strength so that the integrity of the spine can withstand the activity of walking and sitting.

Pre-teens: A scoliosis (curvature of the spine) screening should be performed. As children grow and play sports there is the occasional emergency care of sprains and strains that need to be addressed. In my office symptoms of pain, sprain/strain, and or bone breaks are important times for a child to see me. State of the art X-Ray equipment has always been a part of my chiropractic practice.

WELL-BABY VISITS

The importance of “well-baby” visits begins just after birth and continues through each year of development. These are done in my office with Gentle Caring Hands!

Don’t forget Chiropractic Care will speed the bodies healing process if the child has been sick, with a cold or flu.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR MOMS TOO!

The hormone called Relaxin, is produced in the last trimester of all pregnancy and causes a loosening and stretching of all the ligaments of the body. This is nature at its best, because it is what allows the pelvic bone to separate at delivery, aiding in the delivery of the child through the birth canal easier.

Moms have six weeks after the baby is born for the pelvis to slowly returns to a non-relaxed ligament state. During those first six weeks misalignments can occur much more easily.

It is important to have the mother's pelvic bones realigned after that 6-week period.

COLIC

Colic is a condition of built up, trapped gas causing pain. I know a simple game and exercise to help prevent this uncomfortable build-up. At every diaper change hold the baby's legs below the knee and move them as if the baby is riding a bike or walking up stairs, letting the top of the legs or the thigh press up against the stomach. Press the leg all the way up so that you are getting a pressure, keeping the one leg straight while bending the other. Do this about 10 times.

This exercise does two important things: it helps to massage the lower intestine to stimulate the motion of food and/or gas and it also causes the correct function of the pelvis allowing the pelvis to move properly. Usually kids enjoy it however it should not be done against their will.

PULLING ON A CHILD’S ARM

Beware of a condition that is known as “Nursemaids Elbow”. A child's elbow prior to the age of 7 is susceptible to having the radius pulled out of the socket causing pain and immobility of the child. Therefore a child should never be pulled or picked up by their hands. They should only be lifted up under the armpits. Also do not pull on the child to get them to come with you as this can lead to a separation of the elbow.
